Vilnius hotel help, please?

Labas, friends!

Could you please help me with my travel plans, particularly deciding on what hotel my husband & I should stay at when we come to Vilnius?

I was at the Scandic Neringa on Gedimino Prospektas last time around and had no complaints. Nice place, good location.

In the meantime I've been @ the Uniquestay in Tallinn & absolutely LOVED the fact that each room is equipped with a computer! B) Now there's a Uniquestay in Vilnius as well! My husband and I are both netneads, and the prospect of a computer appeals to us tremendously!

Through chatting with some of you, though, I heard that the location is far from ideal? The Belarus embassy is next door, making the Uniquestay a bit creepy? I also saw in a hotel guide that it has a "slightly obscure location." What do they mean by that????


I realize it's hard to come up with hotel recommendations in the city where you live, but I would love to hear your opinions!

The place is not so terrible, however that is not very prestigiuos. There are Headquarters of Lithuanian Post next to the building of the Uniquestay (former Centrum hotel). Also the place is famous for the substructures of the modern Christ Church that was started in the beginning of 20th century. Few steps away you can find gates of Vilnius built under Russian Imperial rule. They are next to the flowers market. Generally the location of the hotel is the heart of the New City. Anyway you may keep your walking routes directed to the Old City or Gediminas Avenue. The old 'Chrushchevkas' and Railway Station areas are not so interesting and little bit dangerous for common tourists.

Why not something like Reval hotel Lietuva?
That one is so simple to find and everything you need (casino, restaurants, shopping malls) are just round the corner. Moreover the old town and other parts of the city can be reached easily enough.

Reval hotel doesn't have computer in each room, though they have business center and 2 pc at the lobby for a quick email anf wifi in each room.
Location vise its very good, but could be more expensive than uniquestay.
Used to work there myself couple of years ago - don't know if much have changed.

Sula, you do make the Uniquestay's location sound quite unpleasant, so that pretty much nixes it. Good bye, computer! And thanks for recommending Reval Lietuva, praetor. After a superbly beautiful evening at Trakai Castle, John, (Singing) Tram, Jeffas & I went to the rooftop bar for a drink & to enjoy the view. But that place is too big & too modern for me. I'm a hopeless romantic. So at the moment I'm playing with the idea of the Grybas House Hotel. Or is that part of the world too touristy? The place looks & sounds very nice!

Too bad our routes will most probably not intersect but I'm sure we'll have some opinions to share since I'll stay for 2 weeks in Vilnius in June, perhaps shortly after you'll leave

Regarding hotels, just forget that Uniquestay, location is just NOT good enough to consider it.

I haven't got much knowledge of hotels in Vilnius (perhaps I could tell more about Bangkok hotels ) but Grybas house seems good judging the location alone! It's in the middle of the old town where all the most important locations are just minutes away on foot. Although, as I checked their website, the rates don't seem too low there... hotels in Vilnius, to my understanding, are a little too expensive...

Shakespeare hotel

Another option, a cosy little hotel with a theme, a good choise for a romantic and quite a nice location Been there myself and have no complains at all.

Yes, it's a shame, but in all likelihood we'll miss each other this time around. You were the most wonderful guide for me during my first visit to Vilnius, and I'll never forget that. Now I'm hoping that I'll find some other Miestai forumers who will be willing (and able) to spend some time with strangers.

Thank you for the recommendation! I had actually spotted and investigated the Shakespeare on my Baltic Capitals Hotels list, and it does look like a super nice place indeed. You must be a fancy professional to stay there! B)

Be aware of the prices! Vilnius in 2008 is perhaps about 2x more expensive than it was in 2003!

We did have in some sectors... or that's a presumption we may do comparing prices in restaurants at least.

Statistically - no, but in reality almost. CPI is just an indicator off all the goods and services, whilst the biggest price growth happened in so called "pernsioners good basket", which reflects every day spending more to the reality of average consumer earning average income.

I compared my family expenditures for every day purchases in 2003 and 2007, and it almost doubled although no major changes were in the let's call it basket of good and amount consumed. Well if not double 70-80 percent that's for sure.

Heh, well, my spendings probably even tripled or more, but it's more related to my income growth and choosing products and services of better quality. But what I recall of Vilnius prices 5 years ago, the growth in prices is far from being doubled.

Lol, guys! Let's not quibble about how much prices have risen ... I guess they've risen just about everywhere, and in many sectors.

And do they ever come down again? Hardly.

All we can do is adjust to the situation and try to live with it.
