New head-office for TBC Bank
A competition to select a design project for the new head office for Georgia’s TBC Bank attracted the attention of many well-known local and foreign architectural companies. However, only a few were lucky enough to be selected. Among thirty four projects, only four were selected as the first, second and third place winners.
TBC Bank’s head office will be located on Vake-Saburtalo road, in the former Caucasus Military Staff building. On September 12, an awards ceremony was held, announcing Audrius Ambrasas Architects, as the first place winner. This is an architectural company from Latvia, which was granted 50, 000 Lari from TBC Bank.
Architects of Invention were the second place winners. The company was also granted a monetary prize of 30, 000 Lari from TBC Bank. The third place winners were two: the Georgian Architectural Company Dmark and Giorgi Khmaladze. Each of them was awarded 10, 000 Lari.
The head of the jury, who selected the winning projects, was famous Italian Architect, Pipo Ciorra, who worked with other members of the jury over five days to select the winning projects.
The first place winner, Audrius Ambrasas, underlined that the most important task for their project was to save the structure of the building and at the same time make it different. He explained that he was focused on both the interior and the exterior, but the exterior was of higher priority for him.
“To me it’s important to use the whole space of the building. I try to pay attention to small details as well. It was my decision to make the building simple so I used white glass, I think it makes an interesting structure,” Ambrasas noted. “ I never thought I would be the winner. I don’t represent a local company, so it’s a pleasure for me that I won the competition,” Ambrasas said.
Ciorra, the Senior Curator of MAXXI National Museum of the 21st Century Art in Rome, Italy, said the competition was “well-managed” And that the projects were “very interesting.” He said all of the projects had the potential to be selected on the short list and that was the reason why the jury selected two winners for the third prize.
“I can name three of the main criteria for the competition: 1. public quality; 2. accessibility and 3. intelligence in treating customers,” he said. “I am extremely happy to have the opportunity to be part of the decision-making process. It’s a pleasure for me,” Ciorra added.
Mamuka Khazaradze, Chairman of the Supervisory board of TBC Bank, noted that the competition showed creativity at a high level so that making the choice was difficult... “We never thought it would be so difficult to make a decision; I am glad there were many applications,” Khazaradze said, adding that “for now, we have an interesting result. I am quite excited about it. Our choice was quite professional, and I hope TBC Bank’s new head office will be one of those interesting, modern and beautiful buildings in Tbilisi
