O, what a fabulous show!
Aciu, Eddai ir Jonai! I'm just blown away by all that variation, those beautiful and whimsical ornaments in the fassades of (most ) of those buildings! Forget about endless rows of boring windows of the same size and shape inserted at regular intervals as is the style in our more recent architecture!
I can't wait to see those facades that are in need of refurbishment restored! This goes particularly for the large building that appears in John's first photos. I remember it well!
Another observation: somehow ground floor commercial use wrecks the appearance of many of these buildings, although of course not totally. It's a shame that this be so ... there simply is no integration/transition between the floors. Btw, this phenomenon is by no means confined to Vilnius, I've seen it all over the place.Originally Posted by

Of course, Jonai! I understand that quite well. Even looking into the courtyards of the restored buildings, I could tell that in many cases the street fassades had been cheered up while the rear portions of the buildings still looked depressing.
I realize there is a lot to be done yet. This also became clear to me during my trip back to the airport ... many long stretches of buildings that are in dire need of some tender, loving care (and of course infusion of funds). I guess the rain that morning didn't help things.
So, between rehabbing and refurbishing the commieblocks and rehabbing and refurbishing its older apartment buildings, Vilnius will be busy for a long time!
I do hope that the funding will always be ready.Originally Posted by

Galbut is viso nestatys to sogo .
Toje pacioje sostineje kitame straipsnyje dar uzsiminta, kad kitais metais ruosiamasi atstatyti 50m. ginybines sienos.
Tam savivaldybe skirs 0.5mln litu.

Labai sveikintinas zingsnis sienos atstatymas butu. Tallinne ji atrodo nerealiai ir pritraukia daug turistu.
Dar galetu chebra atstatyti tuos bokstelius identiskus gedimino bokstui, nes ju buvo kiek atsimenu apie penkis. Ir, aisku, aukstutine pili ir ta tvora aplink visa ta pilies-rumu-ginybiniu bokstu kompleksa.
Oi, pala, uzsisvajojau
You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.
